A feminist may read this as Salinger using Phoebe as an example to represent the lack of voice women were allowed in society during the late 1940s. The role of women changed quite abruptly in the late 1940s as men came back from war and took their jobs back which consequently left women to be housewives and child carers again. The abrupt cutting off of Phoebe’s voice and opinions within chapter twenty-five of ‘The Catcher in The Rye’ – by Holden, could therefore mimic the way women were cut off from work within the late 40’s, by the men within society.
