According to Tan
According to Tan, language has helped shape her identity. She wouldn’t be who she is today if it weren’t for her various “Englishes.” In her home, Tan learned to speak broken English first, so naturally, it was difficult for her to adjust to proper grammar rules when learning them in school. She struggled in English classes, yet aced Mathematics, making others tell her to drop English altogether and focus on engineering. Rebellious Tan had heard of the stereotype of Asians not being good at English or being writers and had fought to change that. Tan’s connection with language helped shape who she is by fusing her two worlds together.
