Global warming is one of the serious issues which we should globally deal with. Over the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate. It endangers our health and environment, jeopardizes our national security, and threatens other basic human need. In this paper, we discuss some effects of global warming and solutions.
Global warming relates to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s surface that has been observed in recent years. It is debated as to whether this is a natural occurrence or whether human activity has impacted or accelerated it. It is said that the greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere are purported to warm a planet’s lower atmosphere and surface. Global warming is caused by several things, which include man-made or anthropogenic causes, and global warming is also by natural causes. Natural causes are causes that are created by nature. One natural cause is a release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Methane is a greenhouse gas and a very dangerous gas in our environment. Another natural cause is that the earth goes through a cycle of climate change. This climate change usually lasts about 40,000 years .
We have affected our natural environment with the advance of civilization. Burning fossil fuels is one thing that causes global warming. when fossil fuels are burned, they give off a greenhouse gas called CO2. In addition, our personal vehicles cause global warming as well. Cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of all US emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases for every gallon of gas. About five pounds comes from the extraction, production, and delivery of the fuel, while the great bulk of heat-trapping emissions more than 19 pounds per gallon comes right out of car’s tailpipe . It is not too much to say that global warming has been accelerated by the development of the automobile.
Global warming will have a serious impact on the environment and on society. We focus on two social effects of global warming, which are the likelihood of civil war in sub-Saharan Africa and dengue fever in this paper. According to Notaras who is a writer and editor of Our World 2.0 for the United Nations University Media Center, global warming increases the risk of civil war in Africa. In 2007, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region as the world’s first climate change conflict. He says that the assumption was that water scarcity from changed rainfall patterns resulting from climate change contributed to this conflict . It is said that a 1% increase in temperature leads to a 4.5% increase in a civil war in the same year and a 0.9% increase in the following year . By the year 2030, based on averaged data from the 18 climate models used, this will translate to approximately a 54% increase in armed conflict incidence in the region . In addition, Stanford Report insists that first combined historical data on civil wars in sub-Saharan Africa with rainfall and temperature records across the continent. They found that between 1980 and 2002, civil wars were significantly more likely in warmer-than-average years, with a 1-degree Celsius increase in temperature in a given year raising the incidence of conflict across the continent by nearly 50 percent. Building on this historical relationship between temperature and conflict, the researchers then used projections of future temperature and precipitation change to quantify future changes in the likelihood of African civil war. Based on climate projections from 20 global climate models, the researchers found that the incidence of African civil war could increase roughly 55 percent by 2030, resulting in an additional 390,000 battle deaths if future wars are as deadly as recent wars .
Dengue fever is expanding into new geographic areas because of global warming. The number of people at risk from the disease is growing faster than ever before. A 2009 study by the Natural Resources Defense Council revealed the extent to which global warming had increased dengue vulnerability across a temperate area of the United States and Japan . In addition, according to WHO, a report says that the number of cases of people infected by dengue fever was almost 16.000 per one year in the 1960s while more than 2.000.000 cases were reported in 2011. In the 1960s, the countries who were reported some severe infection of the fever were 9 countries such as Filipin, India, and so on, but now the infection was reported in more than 100 counties. Dengue fever is originally a disease which is caused by virus-carrying mosquitoes growing in the area of warm climate. However, the fever is spreading even in Japan, Europe, and America.
